Don't Let a Bad Hair-do Ruin Your Day.

Updated: Jul 31

On Sunday, 7 March, I decided to test my luck at the salon attached to my hotel...let's just say they did not know how to touch up my roots or color my hair well. I didn't really notice till I got back to my room, and finished drying my hair (did I mention they left it damp...). I looked in the mirror and thought, "Why are my roots strawberry blonde/red and not regular blonde to match the REST OF MY HEAD?!?" Sadly the hair salon closes early on Sundays.

This is important to the story, because Monday morning I went back and asked as politely as possible for them to fix it. I also had to show them that they completely missed a spot, and I had black/dark brown hair on the underside of my head. The salon ladies, despite some miscommunications, were kind and tried their best to fix it. One bowl of color and another bowl of bleach later...and it was better. It went from a D- to a solid B+. The only reason it was not an A is because they left it damp again since there was only one stylist and people were waiting, good thing I have my own hair dryer. Let's just say I'm not going back there...

I didn't want my day to end on a low note when it had just barely begun. I decided to go on a midday adventure. I started off by returning to Design Plaza in Dongdaemun. My first stop was the Heunginjimun Gate (Dongdaemun Gate) - One of the 8 Majestic Gates of Seoul. Heunginjimun, literally "Gate of Rising Benevolence" or Dongdaemun, is one of The Eight Gates of Seoul in the Fortress Wall. It was impressive.

My next stop, thanks to my hunger for lunch, was down the street. I got a wonderful selection of Korean street food. It was basically like a corn dog and a mozzarella cheese stick had a baby, drizzled in ketchup. I sat on a bench in the park and devoured that sucker. Then I walked down the street and saw a vendor selling fun socks.

This vendor probably had the largest selection of fun socks I have ever seen. I settled on some minion socks and Toy Story socks (they had the little green aliens from the claw machine)...classy right?! It was only 3,000 won for both, which is not even $3. After shopping, I treated myself to a fresh strawberry banana juice blend.

I had my new socks, a stomach full of food, and I thought...what better then a walk in the park? So I went and explored more of Design Plaza. I saw sculptures, statues and architecture that was unique and provided excellent photo opportunities. It was all just waiting to be Instagrammed.

I ended up walking around for quite a few hours, so after taking many photos, I caught the train to a place nearby the hotel. I grabbed some Lotteria for dinner (think Korean McDonalds), and then returned to my room for dinner and a movie. My afternoon wasn't anything fancy, but seeing some fun sites and architecture, and just strolling through the park and neighborhoods was a much needed breather after my hair fiasco. I'm glad I made the best of my Monday afternoon.
